While (+ clause(subject +verb)) 

"While I was trying to sleep, I heard a noise!"

"I played drums while she slept"

"She eats ice cream while I work"


: remove the subject + be verb (only remove subject in continuous forms)

-> DEFINITELY sounds more formal

"While trying to sleep, I heard a noise!"


During

= in the middle of

"I hate people who talk during movies!"


Meanwhile

= at the same time

"Superman was flying and saving the world! Meanwhile, in Gotham, Batman was crying"


Awhile

= a period of time

: is an adverb

"My mother is staying awhile"

"My mother is staying for a while" (awhile = a while with "for")


A while

: is a noun

: talks about the length or period of time(that can be specified)

"I slept for a while"

"This will take a while"


For a while

: is used when talking about a duration of time (about now)

"I stayed in the restaurant for a while after I finished eating"

"I am going to take a walk around the neighborhood for a while"

"I traveled around Europe for a while when I was in my twenties"


In a while

: is used when talking about an upcoming activity (about soon)

"I am going to leave the office in a while"

"We're going to go to the coffee shop in a while, you want anything?"
